Not to be a total dick, but fill in the details: how much was this package? (Possibly to old for the price to be relevant) How many cameras, what resolution, NVR style, size of the HDD inside, etc? How user friendly was the software, how many AI features and notifications would it do? Why does anyone waste time on Reddit? everyone ponders □□□ Yes people can complain or DIY a raspi solution, but Synology has the majority market share. Ring and Nest have 2.5 million doorbells sold in 3 years growing exponentially with Alexa, also fact. Fact is additional Synology camera license costs $50 it's not a half truth or blatant misinformation, $50 is fact. Surveillance Station software is NOT included with DSM7, it's an additional package you have to download, and only has 2 free licences, that's all you get. Can't go an hour whiteout seeing Amazon and Google market these stupid cloud cameras. Maybe you live under a rock? Ring and Nest are having a holiday season battle for who's going to sell the most doorbell cameras too see Grandma coming. My first camera system wasn't great resolution either, I've got maybe 4 terrible videos worth keeping. Product didn't match the marketing, got what they laid for. I've never seen a 10 year old Costco video posted on YouTube that was watchable. You have your Costco opinion, I have mine that those early systems ended up in the trash after failing outdoors and quality of video wasn't worth watching the footage. But people try the 2 free cameras and get hooked, if they didn't like it better than other options, they would just run to Blue Iris and never mention the $50 on Reddit, but they do want it over Blue Iris and whine about the cost. Good luck building a cheaper computer or raspi, but that's your choice to build a NAS and NVR, nobody has to use Synology. Surveillance Station with the total package cost is cheaper than any point in the past. But a Ring doorbell camera is 720p 15fps, if you want higher resolution cameras and recording equipment it's going to cost more. It wasn't until the Ring doorbell camera that people wanted home security cameras cheap. Security Cameras are an Enterprise level equipment and software. Blue Iris isn't cheaper if you have to build a computer to run it, you've already purchased the Synology and just need to add the licences. The total cost has fallen so far now the only complaint left is "Synology won't give away free software" sorry it's still a better quality option than others. 10 years ago was much higher entry to get security cameras (quality cameras with an NVR, drives and software). The total cost to run security cameras is cheaper cameras + device + drives + software. You're so short sighted you didn't understand what I'm telling you.
